Term Defintion
Accessibility

The practice of making web pages functional to people with disabilities and providing access to information for those who would otherwise lose their opportunity to use the web. In contrast inaccessible means unobtainable, nonfunctional.

Back Links

Links that point to your site from sites other than your own. Back links (or inbound links) are an important asset that will improve your site's PageRank (PR) and search engine positions.

Blog

An online diary whose entries are frequently updated.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are a type of web navigation indicating the user's current location within the website with links to a list of pages above the current page in the hierarchy, up to the main page. It shows users where they are currently located in the site's architecture and lets them back up levels one at a time. It is a recursive path.

Browser

The software on a computer that allows websites to be rendered so they can be "read" by users. Examples of browsers include Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome. If you are reading this, the program you are viewing this page in is your browser.

Browser
The software on a computer that allows websites to be rendered so they can be "read" by users. This maybe a browser that renders things visually, in a manner confined to text only, or in any other manner that may be appropriate, such as voice output.
Cache

Copies of a web page stored locally on a user's hard drive or within a search engine's database. Allows pages to load quickly when a user hits the Back button in their web browser, since the page is not being redownloaded off of the Internet.

Call to action

Copy used in advertising to encourage a person to complete an action desired by the advertiser. Examples of call to action words are "Click here", "Buy Now" or "Click to download."

Captions

Captions are text transcripts that are synchronized with audio or visual tracks. Clickthrough rate

The rate at which people click on a link such as a search engine listing or a banner ad. Used to measure the effectiveness of an advertising piece on the web.

Color Contrast

Color contrast refers to how close hues are in value. The human eye requires good contrast for visibility and legibility. Colors too close in value tend to blur together, and their borders "melt," creating legibility problems. For example, black text on a dark blue background is difficult to read.

Consistency.

Consistency is the quality of an interface when it behaves in ways users expect. It means that users can apply the knowledge obtained in some previous experience to enhance current performance.

Content Management System

A type of software used to build web sites which separates the content of a Web site from its code, allowing regular people (non-developers) to add and update content.

Conversion

The act of converting a web site visitor into a customer or taking that visitor a step closer to customer acquisition (such as convincing them to sign up for your e-mail newsletter).

CPM

Cost per thousand (CPM) is the cost incurred or price paid for a thousand ad impressions.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)  are a set of rules that define how elements like fonts and background colors should appear on a website. Before CSS , all font colors, background styles, alignments, borders, and sizes had to be hard coded repeatedly into each page's HTML. CSS allows web designers to extract this information, saving time and resulting in simpler and more consistent HTML code.

Deep Linking

Deep links go directly to an inner page of a website rather than the homepage. They enable direct linking to highly specific content.

Deliverable

A project management term for the quantifiable goods or services that must be completed and delivered under the terms of a contract.

Dynamic

A dynamic (or database-driven) website has content generated 'on-the-fly' from a database which changes automatically based on user actions. A CMS or blog is a dynamic site which gives the website owner the ability to update and https://carbohealth.com/launched-depression.html add new content to the site without needing to understand code. Other examples of dynamic content include: shopping carts, Google maps, searchable directories and discussion forums.

Findability

How easily your site can be found in search engines.

Flash

Flash is a multimedia special effects plug-in developed by Macromedia. It is frequently used to add animation, video, and interactivity to web pages.

Flash intro

A short animated Flash movie that Internet users are made to sit through upon entry to a home page. Flash intros annoy users and since search engines can't 'read' content embedded in Flash, they have a negative effect on search engine rankings.

Fluid

A fluid or liquid layout is a web page which re-scales to fit different resolutions and different window sizes.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a method to upload and download files over the Internet.

Geo-targeted

Advertising that is displayed based on the geographic location of the website visitor.

GIF

GIF is an abbreviation for Graphics Interchange Format. It suited for flat color images and drawings. GIF images display up to 256 colors. The format was created by CompuServ and is often used for animated images.

Greek Text

Greek text is dummy text that is inserted into a web page to illustrate the position of the actual text on a page layout.

Headings

In (X)HTML there are 6 levels of headings, h1 through to h6. These create a logical structure in your web documents, with h1 the most important heading and farmacia la fe h6  the least important heading. They are extremely important to browsers which don't display information in a visual way, relying on text to speech conversion, or braille conversion.

Hex

Hexadecimal numbers are used in HTML and CSS, and other computing applications, to represent colors. The bytes represent the red, green and blue components of the color. The system uses numbers from 0 to 9 and letters from a to f in any combination of six to represent the correlating red, green, and blue colors (#RRGGBB). e.g. #FFFFFF = white.

Hits

A download of a file from a web server. Hits do not correlate with web page visits and are not a meaningful gauge of webpage traffic. Every graphic on a web page counts as a hit. Thus, a single access of a web page with 20 unique graphics on it register as 21 hits - 20 for the graphics and 1 for the HTML page. Web metrics guru Jim Sterne says hits "stand for How Idiots Track Success." People who talk in terms of hits are usually either ignorant or are trying to snow their boss into thinking the website is doing better than it really is.

Horizontal Scrolling

Horizontal scrolling is scrolling sideways within a web browser's window. When a site has content that is wider than the browser window, users must scroll horizontally to see it. Horizontal scrolling should be avoided if possible. It's awkward to do and users hate it.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the markup language used on most of the World Wide Web to create web pages. The standards for HTML are controlled by the W3C.

Interstitial Ad

An ad page that appears for a short period of time before the user-requested page is displayed.

IP Address

IP Address stands for Internet Protocol Address and is a four-part series of numbers separated by periods which represent the domain, the network, the subnetwork and the host computer. Each device connected to the Internet is assigned a unique permanent (static) or temporary (dynamic) IP address. The IP Address sometimes translates into a specific domain name.

JavaScript

JavaScript is a client-side scripting language that adds simple dynamic functionality to HTML documents. JavaScript is not Java. Java is a full programming language while JavaScript is only a scripting language, and cannot be used to write full blown applications.

Joomla

One of the most popular Open Source content management systems available. A flexible system with over 10,000 extensions that can be used to build both simple and complex web sites.

JPEG

JPEG is an abbreviation of "Joint Photographic Experts Group" and pronounced jay-peg. It is a a lossy compression file format used frequently for photographs.

Keyphrase

Phrases or a search term made up of multiple keywords that a user would enter into a search engine. In SEO (search engine optimization), optimizing your site for specific keyphrases will yield more specific and relevant traffic.

Keyword

A word entered into a search engine to find relevant Web pages.

Keyword research

Determining the most popular words and phrases that people actually use to find something in a search engine, then compiling them into a list for use in search engine optimization on web pages.

Landing page

The web page where people are directed once they click on an online advertisement or search listing. Landing pages are designed to be highly relevant to the advertisement and encourage users to complete a "call to action". Also known as the "click through URL" or "destination URL," examples of landing pages are newsletter sign up forms, or the page where a product or service can be purchased.

Legibility

Legibility is a measure how clear text is visually and how readable it is to users.

Link bait

Useful or entertaining web content which compels users to link to it.

Link building

Actions to increase the number of links on other sites which point to yours for the purpose of increasing your "link popularity" and/or "PageRank." Considerations for link building can include directory submissions and press release syndication.

Link rot

Link rot is the degeneration of a web page due to broken links.

Meta tags

Information about a web page contained in HTML tags invisible to site visitors. There are a range of meta tags, only a few of which are relevant to search engine spiders. Two of the most well-known meta tags are the meta description and meta keywords; which are ignored by most major search engines, including Google

Mouseover

Where hovering the mouse over a text or graphic link without clicking displays something new on the page. For example, a horizontal navigation bar may display further sub-section choices underneath the section hovered over.

MySQL

MySQL is a popular relational database system which integrates well with PHP. It is used to store data in many popular blog platforms and CMS systems like Joomla and Wordpress.

Pop under

A pop-up ad that appears underneath the currently active web browser window. An annoying, if not shady, tactic used by some web advertisers.

Pop up

A web page that displays in a new, typically smaller, web browser window, above the currently active browser window. Pop-ups are used for promotions, ads, email newsletter invitations, survey invitations, and the like.

PPC

Pay per click (PPC) is a pay-for-performance pricing model where advertising (such as banners or paid search engine listings) is priced based on number of clickthroughs rather than impressions or other criteria.

Prototype

A prototype is a partially completed mockup of your final website. Prototyping allows you to test certain parts of the final website, especially when it is incomplete. This model can be as simple as paper-and-pencil drawings or as complex as actual working code.

Query

A keyword or phrase inquiry entered into a search engine or database. A person types in words and the search engine database returns results that matches the user's query.

Reach

The total number of unique users or percentage of a target audience who see an ad over a specific period of time.

Readability

Readability is the degree to which the meaning of text is understandable, based on the complexity of sentences and the difficulty of vocabulary. Indexes for readability usually rank usability by the age or grade level required for someone to be able to readily understand a reading passage.

Reciprocal linking

The practice of trading links between websites.

RSS

A RSS "feed" (or "channel") allows a website to offer its headlines and latest news in a simple format that users can subscribe to. It is used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts. When a website has an RSS feed, it can be said to be "syndicated". There are other syndication formats besides RSS, but RSS is the most widely used and supported.

Scope

The original objectives of a project as defined in the website development contract and specifications document. Scope creep is the expansion of a project beyond its original objectives. It is a term used when clients who don't realize the ramifications, make individual changes and teeny modifications to projects, which can lead to budgetary increases and time delays.

Screenshot

Taking snapshots of a computer screen using a special program to illustrate what the screen looked like during the execution of a series of tasks. This technique is used in website development, employee time tracking and as an aid in technical support.

Search engine marketing

Search engine marketing (SEM) are strategies and tactics undertaken to improve search engine positions and increase the amount and quality of leads generated by search engines.

Search engine optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) involves making internal changes to a website's structure and content to improve the rankings of web pages in the search engines.

Streaming media

Audio-visual content that is played as it is being downloaded. Thus, an Internet user could begin watching a video clip as the footage downloads rather than having to wait for the clip to download in its entirety beforehand.

Syndication

An option that allows you to extend your reach by distributing content to additional partner sites and subscribers.

Tag Line

A tag line is a slogan, catch phrase or sentence that is closely associated with a website, business or organization. A tagline may appear near, or next to, a logo.

Target Audience

The target audience is the group of people which advertisers wish to sell their product or service to. Target markets are defined in terms of location, demographics, purchase behavior, media or product usage.

Unique visitors

A count of individual users who have accessed your web site

URL

Acronym for Uniform Resource Locator used interchangeably with the term "web address." URLs can specify the location of a web page, an email address, or a file on an FTP server, among other things

Validation

Validation is the process of verifying that markup, cascading style sheets, etc. comply with World Wide Web Consortium recommendations.

White Space

White space is the open space between visual elements on a web page. White space gives the eye rest while cuttered designs hinder clarity and tire the eye. Judicial placement of white space can emphasis page elements and help to direct the eye to important content.

Wireframe

A wireframe is a skeleton version of a website that depicts navigational concepts and page content. It is a set of cross-linked pages that acts like a functional prototype of the final website without the graphics.

Wordpress

Wordpress is an excellent open-source web publishing system created primarily as blogging software, ideal for managing content that is frequently updated on simple websites.
